Glorious Akaka Falls, where water tumbles 442 feet into a stream-eroded gorge, is considered a must see on the Big Island.
A pleasant, moderately challenging 0.4-mile loop takes visitors through a lush rain forest of philodendron vines, wild orchids, bamboo groves and hanging heliconia. The 100-foot Kahuna Falls come into view first, and it is impressive. But Akaka Falls, laden with ferns, is breathtaking.
The park entrance is at the end of Akaka Falls Road, Hwy. 220, 3.6 miles southwest of Honomu.
This park offers a pleasant self-guided walk through lush tropical vegetation and to scenic vista points overlooking the cascading Kahuna Falls and the free-falling Akaka Falls. The 0.4-mile loop footpath requires some physical exertion. Park size is 65.4 acres.
